“Sunscreen is the most important anti-aging product you can use. It's more powerful than any fancy serum, cream or exfoliator." - Dr. Anthony Youn
When it comes to protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays, sunscreen is a must. But many people make the mistake of relying solely on SPF in their moisturiser or makeup, rather than using a dedicated sunscreen. Here's why this is a bad idea:
SPF in moisturiser or makeup just can't be enough: Most moisturisers and makeup products that contain very little SPF. While this is better than nothing, it may not be enough to provide adequate protection for your skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
You may not be applying enough: Even if your moisturiser or makeup has an adequate SPF rating, you may not be applying enough product to provide the level of protection you need. The recommended amount of sunscreen is 1/4 teaspoon for the face alone, and most people do not apply this much moisturizer or makeup.
You may not be reapplying often enough: Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, or more frequently if you are swimming or sweating. If you are relying on SPF in your moisturizer or makeup, you may not be reapplying often enough to maintain adequate protection.
Other factors can reduce effectiveness: Sunscreen can be rubbed off by clothing, towels, or other objects, reducing its effectiveness. Makeup can also be rubbed off or diluted by sweat or oil, making it less effective as a sunscreen.
You may not be getting full-spectrum protection: Many moisturisers and makeup products only provide protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. However, UVA rays are also harmful and can cause premature aging and skin damage. Sunscreens are often labeled as "broad
spectrum," meaning they protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
In short, relying solely on SPF in your moisturizer or makeup is not enough to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. To ensure adequate protection, use a dedicated sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, apply the recommended amount, and reapply every two hours or as needed. Don't forget to choose a sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection against both
UVA and UVB rays. Your skin will thank you!
